Let’s Discuss Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is a set of strategies and technologies used to protect data and digital systems from cyberattacks. This includes measures such as strong password protection, secure connections, encryption, and more. Cybersecurity is important for both software and hardware, as well as information on the Internet. It can protect everything from personal information to complex government systems.

Beware of these Types of Cyber Attacks!

Cyberattacks can cause various types of damage to individuals, businesses, and government organizations. These include financial loss, identity theft, and reputational damage. They are classified according to how they work. There are 5 types of cyberattacks that you should beware of:

Phishing:

Phishing scams are email or text messages that seem to come from reputable sources. Still, their goal is to trick you into giving them sensitive information, like credit card details and login credentials, or to install malware on your device. These types of attacks are very common against consumers.

Malware:

Malware is any software created to intentionally cause harm to a computer or network. This can include viruses, worms, spyware, and ransomware. Malware often enters a computer when the user unknowingly clicks a link or downloads an attachment that installs the harmful software.

Once malware enters a system, it can cause serious damage by blocking access to key components of the network (ransomware), secretly obtaining information by transmitting data from the hard drive (spyware), disrupting components, and rendering the system inoperable.

Eavesdropping Attacks:

A hacker interfering with data in transit by computer, smartphone, or other connected device is committing an eavesdropping attack. Attackers exploit unsecured network communications to access user data as it’s being sent or received.

Eavesdropping is when a user unwarily connects to an unsecured network and unknowingly sends over business data that could be intercepted. Eavesdropping attacks are hard to detect because, in contrast to some other cyberattacks, there may not be any reduced performance on the device or network.

Denial-of-Service Attacks:

DoS attacks overload network resources to such an extent that authorized users cannot access services. By flooding servers and hosts with phony traffic, DoS attackers aim to crash the system. Such attacks usually come from a single location and focus on one targeted system.

Distributed Denial-of-Service Attacks:

DDoS attacks come from more than one remote machine at a time, making them difficult to detect. DDoS attack traffic can be deployed faster than DoS too, so they’re generally harder to stop.

Are You an Easy Target for Cyber Attacks?

Although all systems face some level of cyberattack risk, businesses and government entities are often the main targets because they store valuable information. For example, the Department of Homeland Security uses strong cybersecurity measures to protect government information from other countries, nation-states, and individual hackers.

Any business that stores credit card information from its users is at high risk of being hacked. Large businesses are often targeted because they have a large network of employees with personal information stored.

Nesso Cybersecurity Services

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting devices, computer systems, and networks from cyberattacks. Our team takes measures to prevent attacks as well as detection and response protocols in the event of an attack. Cyber security has become increasingly essential with the world’s large scale of information being stored online.

To keep your devices and data secure, we take various cybersecurity measures. For example, many devices come with password protection to deter hackers. To prevent potential attacks, we use encryption to protect data from hackers or antivirus software to scan and stop any malicious activity before it happens.

Nesso Forensic Accounting Services

Our forensic accounting services focus on auditing and investigating the finances of an individual or business with evidence of potential crimes. Our forensic accountants are CPAs that commonly work for insurance companies, financial institutions, and law enforcement agencies.

Our forensic accountants look at financial records that may serve as legal evidence and often give testimony in court cases as experts. For example, they might work on fraud or embezzlement cases and have to explain the crime’s financial details in court.

What Can Our Forensic CPAs Do for You?

Our forensic accountants use their skills to examine, understand, and present complex financial data. This may involve collecting financial evidence, developing computer applications to manage information, and writing reports or giving presentations with their findings.

Here’s what our CPAs focus on:

Litigation Support:

Forensic accounting is used to calculate damages during a legal dispute. Our findings can help resolve the issue through settlements or court decisions, such as compensation or benefit disputes. If the case goes to trial, our forensic accountants may be asked to testify as  expert witnesses.

Criminal Investigation:

We don’t just assess whether a crime has been committed but also judge the likelihood of criminal intent. Some of these crimes could include embezzlement by employees, securities fraud, deliberate falsification of financial records, identity theft, and insurance fraud.

We investigate construction claims or expropriations and determine the economic results of a breach of contract.

Insurance Industry:

The insurance industry often uses forensic accounting in order to determine how much money is owed in cases like vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, and more. We rely on historical data instead of real-time information, meaning that vital changes to an insurance claim might be overlooked.
