Medicare is a government-run health insurance program for seniors and people with disabilities. There are four basic parts to the Medicare program: Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans), and Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage). Part A and Part B together are also referred to as Original Medicare. While these four parts cover a range of medical expenses, there are still some limitations; that’s where Medigap comes in.
Medigap plans aim to help cover some of the expenses that Original Medicare doesn’t, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. There are ten Medigap plans, each with its unique set of benefits; Plan N is one of them. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at Plan N, what it covers, and what it doesn’t. We’ll also discuss topics like eligibility and enrollment so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not this plan is right for you.
What Is Medigap Plan N, And What Does It Cover?
Medigap Plan N is a type of health insurance designed to supplement Original Medicare. Every Medigap policy is standardized, including Plan N. Therefore, no matter which company you buy your policy from, it will offer the same essential benefits.
Medigap Plan N Eligibility And Enrollment Periods
To be eligible for Medigap Plan N, you must be an Original Medicare beneficiary. The program is typically available to people 65 years or older, people younger than 65 with a disability, or people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease. It’s important to note that individuals currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan won’t be eligible for Medigap coverage.
Open Enrollment Period
You can sign up for a Medigap policy during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins when you enroll in Part B and are 65 or older. During these six months, insurance companies can’t use medical underwriting. Therefore, people with health problems can buy any Medigap policy sold in their state for the same price as healthy people.
Outside The Open Enrollment Period
Suppose you miss your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. In that case, you may still be able to purchase a policy, but you’ll have to undergo medical underwriting. Insurance companies may require you to answer questions about your health, refuse to sell you a policy, or charge you more for your pre-existing health conditions.
How To Enroll In Medigap Plan N
Before enrolling in Medigap Plan N, you should start by researching the different insurance companies that offer coverage in your state. You can use the Medicare Plan Finder tool to compare Medigap policies. Consider your needs and budget to ensure that you choose the right plan.
Once you’ve decided on a particular plan, there are a few different ways you can enroll in Medigap. You can visit Medicare.gov, contact the plan directly, or work with an insurance agent. The main benefit of working with an insurance agent is that they can help guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
Medigap Plan N Costs
The cost of your Medigap Plan N policy will depend on several factors, including your age, gender, tobacco use, and state. Younger people tend to pay less for their coverage than older people. That said, each company decides how to set the premium for its Medigap policies in one of three ways:
- Community Rated: The premium is the same for everyone, regardless of age.
- Issue-Age Rated: The premium depends on your age when you first enroll in the plan and doesn’t increase as you age.
- Attained-Age Rated: Your current age determines your premium, which will increase as you get older.
Remember that you’ll also have to pay your Part B premium. If you have no other health insurance, you’ll likely pay this premium automatically through deductions from Social Security benefits.
